Nature Girls, a signature Teatown Lake Reservation project, offers the opportunity for under-served fifth grade girls in our community to develop a love for the natural sciences by providing positive outdoor experiences studying plants and wildlife living in our neighboring parks and preserves. Introduced in October, this exciting new program meets weekly during the fall and spring at either Peabody Preserve or the Kathryn W. Davis RiverWalk Center at Kinglsand Park, and in the colder winter months, at Washington Irving School. Teatown naturalist Elissa Schilmeister enthusiastically leads her group through the forest, noting invasive species by their scientific names while eager students take photos and record their findings in journals. Elissa teaches the significance of our surroundings and makes studying our natural habitat accessible and interesting to ten and eleven year olds. Kids’ Club is proud to help launch this new program that empowers young girls to succeed in the natural sciences.
