In her own words, Sleepy Hollow High School graduate and current Fordham University student Luisanna Villa talks about giving back to the very program that helped her get into the college of her dreams…
“Three years ago I was the student sitting at the desk at Sleepy Hollow High School with the big, blue SAT book, taking part in the Let’s Get Ready (‘LGR’) program. Now I have the amazing opportunity of being the coach guiding the students through the big, blue SAT book.
As a rising junior at Fordham University, I am very excited about this upcoming fall semester! Aside from the really cool sociology classes that I will be taking, I am required to fulfill field experience hours for the education program. The coordinator of the program provided each student with a list of past placements. I remember looking over the list and seeing LGR as one of the placements. In the email I sent to LGR, I mentioned, ‘I would love to repay the thanks…’ I wanted to thank LGR for the networking workshops, college prep workshops, SAT study sessions and for the extraordinary mentor from Kids’ Club they paired me with. I thought the BEST way to show my gratitude would be to become a volunteer!
Aside from the opportunity to thank LGR, becoming a coach also gives me the chance to hype up the high school students for their SATs. I aspire to be a teacher and one of the many qualities an effective teacher must possess is passion. I think many students would agree that the SATs are no fun, especially studying for them. I think I can change that! I plan to motivate and engage the students during the sessions. Who says studying for SATs cannot be fun?”
Kids’ Club is proud to support Let’s Get Ready, a free of charge SAT tutoring and college prep program for underserved students, and so pleased to see a former graduate giving back to younger students.
