Mentoring holds a special place in Kids’ Club’s heart, as it was one of the first programs we helped fund in Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow. So we are thrilled to have recently helped the mentor model expand via Sleepy Hollow Middle School’s (“SHMS”) Advantage After School program. With support from Family Services of Westchester and Kids’ Club, this TUFSD program provides academic support to over 100 6th, 7th and 8th graders at SHMS three times each week. The program is staffed by teachers from inside and outside the school district, as well, this year, by six bilingual Sleepy Hollow High School students who are paid to serve as Junior Group Leaders. The addition of these Junior Group Leaders is beneficial because it allows the middle schoolers to receive more one-on-one assistance, they relate well to the teenage mentors and because they appreciate the mentors’ familiarity with the assignments. We wish all of the teachers, mentors and students continued success with this important program.
