How can you “fail upwards?” What’s the most important quality to show when interviewing for a job? How can you discern a good entrepreneurial idea from a bad one? What is the biggest mistake students make before seeking an internship? These are some of the questions answered at yesterday’s Power Lunch Career Panel by Ben Carpenter, author of The Bigs, Achieving Your Real World Hopes and Dreams.
Approximately 60 high school students came out to enjoy the final installment of this year’s speaker series. Mr. Carpenter shared how his own daughter’s initial steps into the career world inspired his compilation of specific and broader tips on, among other things, choosing a career, finding a great job, and starting a business. These included advice on networking, information interviews, test marketing, enthusiasm, preparation, confidence, and identifying one’s talents. As a bonus, each student who attended the presentation enjoyed not just free pizza but also a complimentary copy of The Bigs to take home. The Career Panel series is co-sponsored by the SHHS Guidance Department Career Program, Kids’ Club and Viana Pizza.
