The Career Panel Speaker Series resumed at Sleepy Hollow High School this morning, where students in the AP Computer Science, AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Studies classes were invited to hear presentations from three professionals working in the digital age.
Jason Jercinovic, Head of Marketing Innovation at Havas Worldwide, Adrienne Shulman, Director of Business Systems for Cornerstone OnDemand, and Joe Johnson, Lead Engineer at Express Scripts, shared the stories of their curving career paths with the students. Each shared how the educational and professional choices they first made were not necessarily the ones that brought them to where they are today. Jason, for example, earned a living as a professional musician before returning to his roots in math and science. Adrienne started out in the field of environmental engineering before switching gears to do technology consulting. Joe’s initial areas of study included philosophy and the arts, but a class in symbolic logic sparked an interest in computer programming. The point being that careers that incorporate technology are open to people with any number of different skills and interests.
The students had opportunities to ask questions of the panelists, watch videos of their work (and Cornerstone OnDemand’s cool office environment), and think about a number of the differing ways that one can make a career incorporating digital technology. They learned that the tech field is available to job applicants with all different passions, “mini-passions,” abilities and degrees, and hopefully were inspired to think about how they can bring their own interests to this growing and cross-disciplinary field. Kids’ Club is proud to have been able to bring these dynamic speakers to SHHS, and we look forward to helping the SHHS Guidance Department put together additional inspirational panels in 2018.
