The Junior Group Leader mentoring program, an after school homework help program serving more than 100 sixth, seventh and eighth graders four days per week, has returned to Sleepy Hollow Middle School for the fourth year. This program is unique in that in addition to the teachers who assist students with their homework, eleven students from Sleepy Hollow High School are paid to serve as mentors to the children, as well. The mentors, comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors, have great rapport with the middle schoolers, know the homework subject matter well and allow for even more individualized attention for the children. Many of the mentors speak Spanish, and work either one on one with a student or in small groups. Kids’ Club is proud to help fund this great program which satisfies several needs in the community: the high school mentors get invaluable paid work experience and the middle school students receive competent, caring and welcomed assistance in completing their homework.
